WhatsApp is working on setting up a 24-hour customer support for users of its payments services that is slated to be rolled out in India in the coming weeks. WhatsApp, which has over 200 million users in India, will provide support through e-mails as well as a toll-free number. “We will provide 24-hour customer support. Payments users can contact the support team via e-mail and a toll-free number (when the service is rolled out in India),” a WhatsApp spokesperson told PTI.
The spokesperson added that the support will be available in English as well as three Indian languages — Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. However, the official declined to comment on the launch dates and other details. While WhatsApp is yet to announce the official date of launch of its UPI-based payments service, industry watchers expect an announcement to come in the next few weeks.
Almost one million people are “testing” WhatsApp’s payments service in India, which is the largest base for the Facebook-owned company that has over 1.5 billion users globally. WhatsApp payment service, which rivals the likes of Paytm, has been in beta testing in India over the last few months.
The Facebook-owned company is also updating its terms of service and privacy policy for users to “reflect the addition of payment interoperability features” ahead of the full-fledged launch of the service.
Under the updated terms, WhatsApp states that it will not provide refunds or facilitate chargebacks as once a user submits a payment, it is final. “WhatsApp is not liable for unauthorised transactions. We assume no responsibility for the underlying transaction of funds, or the actions or identity of any transfer recipient or sender,” it adds.
The spokesperson explained that while users can connect with WhatsApp for queries related to the payments offering, they would have to reach out to their banks for any dispute resolution.

Indo-American wellness conclave and exhibition at Santa Clara to bring Indian wellness practices to American living

New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): Over many years, the definition of Wellness has changed across cultures and times. But not in India! The concept of Wellness in true terms remains the same as it was 5000 years ago. India Post, a weekly newspaper based in California, is organizing Indo-American Wellness Conclave and Exhibition, 2018 in Santa Clara, California (USA) from 22nd to 24th June 2018.

The Conclave and Exhibition aim to detail and discuss the meaning of Wellness and its pursuit as per India's traditional practices. It is a three-day event, starting from 10:00 A.M and ending at 5:00 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24. On Friday, the exhibition will open at 3 p.m. there will be a formal inauguration at 7 p.m. by the Honorable Consul General Venkatesan Ashok and other dignitaries.

This is a free event aimed at increasing awareness of natural alternative healing practices and products among the general public. Santa Clara is the heart of Silicon Valley and it is a great place to bring together often stressed out, busy professionals to avail of the benefits of ancient healing practices and alternative medicine.

Each day, the Exhibition will involve seminars, presentations, lectures, and group discussions on different and unique topics. These topics will be based on India's traditional Wellness regime such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Siddha, Unani, Naturopathy, and Homeopathy. For this, experts and veterans in the relevant industries are duly invited as speakers who will talk about the basic practices and norms involved in maintaining "A State of Mind"- Wellness.

There are also speakers from spiritual organizations of Indian origin with branches in the US.

This B2B and B2C Exhibition will bring the Indo-American, American and Indian community together to comprehend Wellness as Wealth to Cherish. American Wellness traders, distributors, and end-customers can attend the exhibition and may seek business opportunities. While the Ayurvedic Product Manufacturers, Resellers, Wellness Research Centers, National as well as International Universities, Spas, Labs, and Trade houses can showcase their Ayurvedic or homeopathic products, services, treatments, therapies, and solutions, etc.

On the third day, the Exhibition will offer a networking forum to all the attendees who can explore the business or career opportunities through one-to-one interaction. Ultimately, the Indo-American Wellness and Exhibition 2018 will conclude with a gala dinner. The USA regulatory body members will also be invited to the dinner for a more informative interaction.

India Post, a California based venture, is delighted to organize this exhibition so that the roots of natural pharmacy can be traced back and its impact on our health and wellness can be determined.

Spokesperson of IACWE commented on this initiative, "We must make a shift to natural ways of living and Ayurvedic pharmacy to keep our body in the state of wellness. We've noticed that though there are many people working in these industries, they barely have a clear picture of how herbal and natural treatments and healthy lifestyle as described in Ayurveda impact our lives. Also, many startup manufacturing companies in America fall short of expertise and funds which eventually result in failures. Therefore, I hope our Indo-American Wellness Conclave and Exhibition would help people communicate with each other efficiently. We are looking forward to a more proactive approach taken by all attendees in making it a successful and value-adding Exhibition for all." (ANI)

This story has not been edited. Human brains work in silent gaps created between neuron spikes

Augusta, (Georgia) [USA] June 18 (ANI): The human brain works on comparative silence that is created between every neuron spikes, according to a recent study,

According to Dr Joe Z. Tsien of Augusta University the brain uses this period of silence to encrypt information.

According to scientists, neurons generate perceptions, thoughts and actions by emitting electrical pulses which is called action potentials or spikes.

Tsien's team who has monitored mouse neurons during various activities said that the magic happens when a group of neurons enter an atypical state- not of firing - but of the relative periods of silence between the firing and entering that period at the same time.

These silent spaces between firings are called interspike intervals, and, the neurons having irregular intervals at the same time are part of a clique generating perceptions, actions and thoughts in real time.

One problem with that standard measure of neuron action is that neurons are essentially always firing at some level and with spontaneous fluctuation, even when it's not clear what is happening as a result, says Tsien.

He uses the analogy of an ocean surface that may look calm compared to a tsunami, but is never truly still.

Applying this new Neural Self-Information Theory, Tsien's team have identified 15 groups of cell assemblies in the cortex and hippocampus of the brain that work together to enable things sleep cycles, sensing, a person's response to things which they see and experience at any given instant.

The team studied mice playing a game where a light shines on a wall and the creature learns that if he pokes a hole in that same spot, rather than four other choices, he will get a food pellet when he returns to where he started. If he doesn't come back in time or pokes the wrong hole, no food pellet awaits.

"It's a simple task but highly attention driven, and how the brain executes this task was poorly understood," said Tsien.

Tsien added that in order to identify cell cliques which makes the mouse successful in its choice, one must find monitor the interspike intervals of each and every neuron.

Using the analogy of a normally chatty individual in an uncharacteristic period of silence Tsien says the cells one monitors are the ones that move into a surprisal state.

"That is when these cells start to act as a clique," he says. "That is when the neural cliques are coming together to encode a train of thought or a set of actions. If it's what happens usually, that means it does not carry much information, it's like a ground state," added Tsien.

The studies appear in Cerebral Cortex Journal. Trump wants his 'people' to be like Kim's 'people'

Washington D.C. [U.S.A.], June 15 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump on Friday said that he wants "his people" to listen to him, like people of North Korea listens to their leader Kim Jong Un.

"He's the head of a country. I want my people to do the same," he added.

According to The Hill, it is unclear what Trump meant by "his people" and "my people". Pakistan Taliban chief who ordered attack on Malala killed in US drone strike

WASHINGTON: A US drone strike in Afghanistan has killed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Mullah Fazlullah, the man in charge of the outfit operations in the Swat Valley when activist Malala Yousafzai was shot in 2012, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said on Friday. Ministry of Defence spokesman Mohammad Radmanish told CNN that Fazlullah, who led the TTP from 2013, was killed in the strike in Kunar province on Wednesday. Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a spokesman for US Forces-Afghanistan, earlier told the Voice of America that US forces conducted a counter-terrorism strike on June 13 in Kunar which is close to the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan and targeted a senior leader of a designated terrorist organisation. Locals in the area confirmed the death. However, Pentagon officials declined to comment on the development. Fazlullah had been a major figure in the TTP even before he became "emir" of the group in late 2013 and led a Pakistan Taliban militia in the country's Swat Valley before his elevation to leadership of the group. US officials said Fazlullah directed numerous high-profile attacks against American and Pakistani targets, including the December 2014 attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar that killed 151 people. He is also accused of ordering the 2012 attempted assassination of Malala Yousafzai, who had been advocating for the right of girls to have access to an education. The US State Department offered a $5 million reward for Fazlullah in March, the same month Pakistani sources said his son was killed in an American drone strike on a TTP training facility. A statement from US Forces-Afghanistan claimed that the strike did not put at risk an ongoing, unilateral ceasefire initiated by the Afghan government. "US Forces-Afghanistan and NATO-led Resolute Support forces continue to adhere to the Afghanistan government's unilateral ceasefire with the Afghan Taliban, announced by President Ashraf Ghani. "As previously stated, the ceasefire does not include US counterterrorism efforts against... regional and international terrorist groups, or the inherent right of US and international forces to defend ourselves if attacked," read the statement. "We hope this pause leads to dialogue and progress on reconciliation and a lasting end to hostilities," it added.

UAE to act against Daesh, AQAP in Yemen: Envoy

New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to India Dr. Ahmed Al Banna said Friday that his country's government will take all measures necessary to help neighbouring Yemen free itself from the grip of terrorist groups like the Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Daesh.

In a statement issued here, Dr. Al Banna said, "An Arab coalition has launched military and humanitarian operations in Western Yemen to facilitate uninterrupted supply of relief aid to the Yemeni people by liberating the Red Sea port city of Hodeida from terrorist control."

"The coalition action is at the request of the legitimate government of Yemen. Yemeni President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi yesterday reiterated his call to the Arab coalition to liberate the port city of Hodeidah through military means after having exhausted all efforts to reach a political solution because of the intransigence of the Houthi rebels," Dr. Al Banna added.

"The Arab coalition is spearheaded by the Yemeni National Army, aided by local Yemeni resistance fighters, many of whom are from the Hodeida area. It includes military forces from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and several Arab nations. The current operations to liberate Hodeida port are in line with UN Security Council Resolutions 2216, 2231 and 2286. The UAE and the rest of the Arab coalition continue to strongly support the efforts of the UN Special Envoy, Martin Griffiths, consistent with UN Security Council resolutions," he said.

"The immediate aim of the liberation of Hodeida port is to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Yemen and create conditions favourable to achieving a negotiated settlement by cutting off supplies of illicit arms that have fueled an insurgency in that country. In the coalition's assessment, Iran has been linked to supplies of unmanned aerial vehicles, small weapons, drone boats and other arms in direct violations of UN Security Council Resolutions 2216 and 2231. Our assessment is that once Iranian arms supplies to the militias are stopped, the ballistic missile attacks by the Houthis against neighbouring countries will stop, marking a significant improvement in regional security," Ambassador Al Banna maintained through his statement.

He claimed that Houthi rebels have misconstrued all goodwill gestures from the UAE as a sign of for weakness.

"The Arab coalition has, therefore, come to the conclusion that liberating Hodeida port from terrorist control will block illegal Iranian weapons transfers...The larger context of the coalition operations in Yemen in general is to end the Iranian aggression and interference in the affairs of the Arab world and the region. The liberation of the Hodeida port will provide a fillip to the revival of the peace process and a return to the negotiation table," the UAE envoy said.

He added, "From April 2015 until May 2018, the UAE has provided USD 3.76 billion in assistance to Yemen, benefitting more than 13.8 million people from its 12 governorates. In response to the UN Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan 2018, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have together contributed USD 1 billion.

"UAE and coalition operation to retake Hodeida will also improve the flow of humanitarian assistance to areas controlled by Houthi rebels and areas controlled by the legitimate government of Yemen," he said.

"Liberating Hodeida and creating conditions favourable to achieving a negotiated settlement in Yemen will help to refocus full attention to the fight against AQAP (Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula) and Daesh that present serious risks to other countries targeted by extremist groups. The Arab coalition urges other nations and interested parties to intensify efforts to facilitate the political transition process and to support humanitarian efforts to meet the urgent needs of the Yemeni people," he concluded. Who's responsible for marine litter?

Washington D.C. [U.S.A.], June 15 (ANI): Turns out, the general public is more responsible for global concerns such as increasing litter in water bodies than industries and retailers.

According to a study conducted by the University of Plymouth, the global marine litter crisis is happening more because of the attitude of members of the public than toxic-waste-generating industries.

The results were among the findings of a Europe-wide study which asked more than 1,100 members of the general public about their attitudes to marine litter.

It showed more than 95 percent of people reported having seen litter when they visited the coast, and such experiences were associated with higher concern and a willingness to adapt personal behaviour to address the problem.

There was also growing appreciation and concern about the threat litter pose to wildlife within the marine environment, vastly outweighing other fears such as the impact on tourism and the fishing and shipping industries.

Direct releases into the sea and at the coast were perceived to be more likely routes for waste to enter the marine environment than overflows from water treatment or landfill sites.

And when asked about the key factors contributing to the problem, people attributed it predominantly to the use of plastic in products and packaging, human behaviour when disposing of litter, and the single-use nature of plastics.

The research is the first European public survey to focus solely on marine litter and people's attitudes towards it.

Sabine Pahl, the corresponding author, said, "Marine litter is an issue without borders. But human behaviour in its many forms is the sole source of the problem, and changing perceptions and behaviour is key to preventing litter from continuing to escape into the natural environment. This research gives us useful insights so that we can attempt to motivate action on land that makes a positive change to our coastlines and oceans now and in the future."

Richard Thompson OBE, who also contributed to the research added, "At a time when there is a broad commitment to address this global crisis, this research presents an interesting conundrum. It is encouraging to see there is growing public awareness of the marine litter problem, but there are clearly challenges to be overcome in convincing people that we all need to be part of the solution. There needs to be a holistic approach which includes governments and industry, scientists and the public, and this research is a useful step in finding ways to communicate that more widely."

The study appears in the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin. Rohingyas to celebrate first Eid in Bangladesh

Dhaka [Bangladesh], June 15 (ANI): An estimated two-thirds of the 1.2 million Rohingya refugees are all set to celebrate their first Eid in Bangladesh.

However, the 700,000 Rohingyas stuck in the world's biggest refugee camp in Bangladesh's Cox Bazar, have no means to celebrate the Muslim festival.

Most of them are more concerned with day-to-day survival as they have been suffering due to heavy rains over the last few days.

Some organisations are handing out new clothes and food to a number of Rohingyas for Eid, but the mood for celebration is very low in the camps, as per some Rohingya leaders.

The Refugee Rehabilitation and Relief Commission office claimed that there are enough mosques at the camps for people to offer Eid prayers, but authorities have still not planned any form of Eid prayer congregation, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Security has also been beefed up at all the camps ahead of the festival.

Rohingyas are a Muslim minority ethnic group in Myanmar and are considered to be illegal immigrants.

More than 700,000 Rohingya refugees are languishing in Bangladeshi refugee camps, after fleeing a brutal Myanmar army campaign launched in August last year.

The United Nations had said the scorched-earth operation, which had left hundreds of villages burned to ash in Myanmar's Rakhine state, amounted to 'ethnic cleansing'. Amnesty to Pakistan: End alarming poll-linked crackdown

New York [United States], June 15 (ANI): New York-based human rights watchdog Amnesty International has appealed to authorities in Pakistan to end what it described as an alarming crackdown on human rights defenders, activists, journalists and other civil society members in the run up to the July 25 general elections.

Amnesty International said it is alarmed by the ongoing wave of arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, attacks on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

"Key freedoms are under relentless attack in Pakistan, with the authorities cracking down on dissent, whether it takes place on the streets, on television news channels, in newspaper columns, or on social media," Dinushika Dissanayake, Deputy Director for South Asia at Amnesty International, said.

According to Amnesty, authorities in Pakistan are cracking down on dissent taking place anywhere, be it on the streets, on television news channels, in newspaper columns, or on social media.

Amnesty International also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of 37 activists currently detained in the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for participating in the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM)'s peaceful protests, which called for an end to extra-judicial executions, enforced disappearances and other human rights violations.

Amnesty's Dissanayake said, "Peaceful protest is a right protected by international human rights law and the Pakistani Constitution. The charge of sedition has no place in a modern, rights-respecting society, and peaceful students should never be tried in an anti-terrorism court. The 37 activists must be released immediately and unconditionally, as they are detained solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression."

It also expressed its deep concern over what it termed the hours-long arbitrary detention of British-Pakistani columnist Gul Bukhari in Lahore on June 6.

Bukhari's detention came a day after ISPR chief Major General Asif Ghafoor complained at a press conference that social media users are criticizing "the state".

Amnesty feels that this highlighting of several social media accounts of bloggers, journalists, activists and human rights defenders has raised fears that Pakistanis will now be targeted for simply exercising their right to freedom of expression.

"Pakistan once proudly boasted a lively and independent media. This, sadly, has stopped being the case. People can no longer speak or write freely," said Dissanayake. (ANI)

This story has not been edited. Countdown for Taliban ceasefire begins

Kabul [Afghanistan], June 15 (ANI): The countdown for the Taliban ceasefire has begun, the Afghanistan Ministry of Defence said.

As long as as weapons are left at the gates, Taliban fighters can enter cities, including Kabul, to spend time with friends and family over Eid, Tolo News reported.

The Taliban on June 9 announced a three-day ceasefire over the Eid holiday, two days after the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced the ceasefire from the 27th of Ramzan (June 12) to the fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr (June 19).

It is the first time the Taliban has agreed to a ceasefire for Eid since the US invasion in 2001.

Since the announcements were made, government's ceasefire has been marred by clashes between government forces and militants.

On June 11, three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed and five others wounded in clashes with the Taliban in northern Sar-e-Pul province.

One area that has been hard hit is Faryab district's Kohistan province where more than 100 government forces are still under siege.

Meanwhile, the United States Army has stressed the need to strengthen the capabilities of Afghan government forces.

The High Peace Council has said that the Afghan government is ready to extend the ceasefire if the Taliban gives a green light. Flavoured additives in e-cigarettes can cause heart damage

Washington D.C. [USA] June 14 (ANI): Flavoured additives used in electronic cigarettes can impair blood vessel function and lead to heart damage, a new study revealed.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid -- including tobacco-derived nicotine, flavouring and other additives -- and produce an aerosol that is inhaled.

According to a study conducted by American Heart Association, flavour additives may impair blood vessel function and is one of the major early indicators of heart damage.

The widely used flavours in e-cigarettes are - menthol (mint), acetylpyridine (burnt flavour), vanillin (vanilla), cinnamaldehyde (cinnamon), eugenol (clove), diacetyl (butter), dimethylpyrazine (strawberry), isoamyl acetate (banana) and eucalyptol (spicy cooling).

According to the study, short-term effects were found on endothelial cells, which line the blood vessels and the inside of the heart.

Researchers found all nine flavours were dangerous to cells in the laboratory at the highest levels tested and all the flavourings impaired nitric oxide production in endothelial cells in culture (outside of the body).

Several of the flavourings - menthol, clove, vanillin, cinnamon and burnt flavouring - resulted in higher levels of an inflammatory marker and lower levels of nitric oxide, a molecule that inhibits inflammation and clotting, and regulates vessels' ability to widen in response to greater blood flow.

"Increased inflammation and a loss of nitric oxide are some of the first changes to occur leading up to cardiovascular disease and events like heart attacks and stroke, so they are considered early predictors of heart disease," said lead researcher Jessica L. Fetterman.

"Our findings suggest that these flavouring additives may have serious health consequences."

The study findings appear in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Journal.
